Christian McCaffrey Fantasy Outlook 2026: The Consensus Is Ignoring 450 Touches
McCaffrey finished RB1 with 416.6 points and led all backs in receptions and receiving yards, but he did it on 450 touches including playoffs at age 29 with 3.9 yards per carry.
Why three independent models agree on a top-five pick
Christian McCaffrey finished as the overall RB1 in 2025 with 416.6 fantasy points across 17 games, averaging 24.5 per game. Our board has him 4 overall with 295.0 implied points, ESPN ranks him 7, and drafters take him at 9.1. The agreement is nearly exact.
The reason all three land in the same spot is usage. He commanded 65% of San Francisco's rush attempts and 23% of its targets, leading all running backs in both receptions with 102 and receiving yards with 924. That dual-role dominance is the rarest profile at the position, and it produced 12 games over 20 PPR points with only one finish under 10.
He also beat the sportsbook lines substantially in the categories that drive fantasy scoring. Books posted him at 7.5 rushing touchdowns and he delivered 10. They posted him at 3.5 receiving touchdowns and he scored 7. The receiving yardage line was 425.5 and he cleared 900. Those are not marginal wins—they are the difference between an RB1 and an RB5.
The decline case is not that he loses his job. It is that he keeps the workload and the efficiency craters at the same time, and he finishes as the RB8 instead of the RB1.
What the consensus does not price
The agreement stops mattering when you read how he got there. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry on 308 rushing attempts. That is the second part of the efficiency picture, and it is bad. A back who leads the league in receptions and receiving yards while averaging under four yards per rush is getting there entirely on volume and red-zone finishing, not on sustainable creation.
He also handled 450 touches when you include playoff work, at age 29, entering a season where he will turn 30 in June. The research on running back aging curves is unambiguous: workload does not stay stable and efficiency does not improve. The historical comp here is not a player who repeats; it is a player who declines from a peak that already happened.
