Ja'Marr Chase Fantasy Outlook 2026: He Was WR4 With Backup Quarterbacks
Chase finished fourth among receivers and third in per-game scoring while Joe Burrow missed nine games. That is the most useful thing anyone can tell you about his floor.
The quarterback thing already happened
Going into last season our board had Ja'Marr Chase first overall and so did ESPN. Then Joe Burrow missed nine games, which is the single worst thing that can happen to a receiver's fantasy season.
Chase finished as the fourth-best fantasy receiver and third at the position in points per game, with 313.6 points and 19.6 per game across 16 appearances. He led the entire league in targets for the second straight year and caught 125 passes.
This is the rare case where a downside scenario got tested in public and the answer came back fine. Most receiver projections carry an unstated assumption that the quarterback stays healthy. Chase spent nine games proving what happens when that assumption breaks, and the answer was a top-four positional finish.
Most receiver projections quietly assume the quarterback stays healthy. Chase spent nine games proving what happens when that breaks, and the answer was WR4.
Why he is third and not first this year
Our board has him 3 overall with 303.0 implied PPR points. ESPN has him 3. The draft room takes him at 6.2. Our value model puts his fair pick at 5, which is essentially where he goes.
That is total agreement, and the reason he sits behind the top backs rather than ahead of them is structural rather than a knock on him. The elite running backs project for more raw fantasy points, because a back who handles 300 touches and scores 15 times accumulates more than a receiver who catches 110 balls. Positional scarcity narrows the gap; it does not close it.
So he is the first receiver off the board on our rankings, at a price that reflects it. There is nothing clever to do here.
