A.J. Brown Fantasy Outlook 2026: What a Trade to New England Actually Changes

What went wrong was not volume or health

A.J. Brown went into 2025 ranked tenth among receivers on our board and ninth on ESPN's. He finished WR11 in total points with 220.3 and eleventh in points per game at 14.7 across 15 games. That finish is underwhelming for a second-round cost, but it is not a collapse.

The sportsbooks had posted him at 78.4 receptions, 1,125.5 receiving yards, and 7.5 receiving touchdowns. He caught 78 passes, gained 1,003 yards, and scored seven times. He beat the catch line by a half-reception, missed the yardage line by 122 yards, and came in a half-touchdown short. The aggregate was a shrug, not a miss.

What made it feel worse than WR11 was the weekly experience. Five games came in under 10 PPR points, including a 1.8-point floor in Week 1. Only four weeks cleared 20 points, with a ceiling of 35.2 in Week 13. For a player drafted in the second round, that boom-to-bust ratio turns every lineup decision into a coin flip.

The yardage shortfall traced to quarterback play, not separation, which is exactly the kind of variance that changes when you trade the player to a team with Drake Maye.

The efficiency leak traced to quarterback play

Brown has hit at least 1,000 receiving yards in six of his seven NFL seasons and has never fallen below seventh among receivers in target share. The target volume in 2025 held — he commanded targets at the rate he always has — but the yardage per target compressed because Philadelphia could not deliver consistent quarterback play after Jalen Hurts went down mid-season.

His 12.9 yards per catch held from 2024, which confirms the separation skill is intact. What did not hold was the depth of target and the accuracy on contested throws, both of which are quarterback-dependent stats that a receiver cannot fix on his own.
